Reduce Stress. Improve Immunity

Like you, I have been monitoring the latest news about the coronavirus (COVID-19) – now a pandemic.

The uncertainty of this is creating massive worldwide stress, and most of us have never experienced anything quite like the coronavirus! Have any of you been to Trader Joes or Costco?  I have never seen such empty shelves.  And don’t get me started about the hunt for toilet paper, Clorox wipes, or hand sanitizer. 

Right now I want to draw your attention to the connection between stress and lowered immune function. 

Fearful thoughts activate the fight or flight center of the brain and initiate the stress response to push cortisol. Normally when the perceived threat is over, the body returns to homeostasis (balance). Unfortunately, there is no end in sight with this virus, and that can leave us in a constant state of stress. 

Cortisol, when balanced, can regulate metabolism, reduce inflammation, help control blood sugar, and assist with memory formulation. But excess cortisol, the result of too much stress, can lower immune function and bone density; increase weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, and heart disease; and interfere with learning and memory.

We need to stay strong and healthy while the CDC, scientists and doctors find a way to contain, treat and vaccinate this virus. 

Already scientists have figured out how the coronavirus breaks into human cells, which could aid in drug development.

The CDC recommends everyone take these steps to prevent illness, and do your part to help in the response to this emerging public health threat.
